PASSPORT BOOKS VS PASSPORT CARDS

With the constant changes in international travel requirements lately, it can be difficult for travelers to prepare for upcoming trips. As travel advisors, we get a lot of questions about passport requirements- so here is what you need to know!

  • PASSPORT BOOKS VS PASSPORT CARDS

Both the passport book and passport card serve as proof of your U.S. citizenship and identity. However, there are a few key differences that you need to be aware of. Passport books can be used for all international travel by air, sea, or land. Passport cards, on the other hand, can only be used at land border crossings and sea ports-of-entry from: Canada, Mexico, The Caribbean, and Bermuda. You CANNOT use a passport card for international air travel.

  • PASSPORT TURNAROUND TIMES

If you have not yet applied for a passport, please keep in mind that the current turnaround time for new applications can take several months. Apply early using this link to avoid any trip disruptions:  How to Apply for A Passport

  • PASSPORT EXPIRATION DATES

If you already have your passport, check the expiration date. You will want to be sure that your passport is valid for at least six months AFTER your scheduled return home, and has at least two blank pages to avoid any issues during travel.

  • REAL ID REQUIREMENTS

Travelers may have heard about the upcoming ID requirement changes regarding REAL ID. Beginning May 3, 2023 every state and territory resident 18 years or older will need to present a REAL ID compliant license/ID, or another acceptable form of identification, for accessing federal facilities and boarding commercial aircraft for domestic flights. The card, itself, must be REAL ID compliant unless the resident is using an alternative acceptable document such as a passport or passport card, or state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License. Visit your state’s driver’s licensing agency website to find out exactly what documentation is required to obtain a REAL ID. The REAL ID does NOT replace passports and cannot be used for international travel.

It is important to note that requirements for individual destinations, as well as returning to the U.S., can change at any time. Keep up to date on the latest travel information here and check out this Traveler's Checklist to help you prepare for your next international adventure!
